Old Burma Road and Flying Tigers (15 days) China Tour

The Flying Tigers were based in Kunming China. Arriving here, we visit several important WWII war sites. As this tour passes through some of the most beautiful scenery in China and visits fascinating ancient towns along the way. The China Burma Road and WWII Tour focus is on World War II sites in China, the history of the Flying Tigers. It is anticipated that veterans from China, Taiwan and the USA may be on the tour and their descendants.

Day -01 Depart USA

Day-00 Arrive Shanghai. Take taxi to your hotel for the night. The next morning, take the subway to the airport for flight to Kunming.

Day 1. November 4, 2013 Arrive Kunming (D)
Take a midday flight to Kunming, arriving at the new Kunming airport our China representative where you will be welcomed transferred to your hotel. The old Kunming airport was one of the Flying Tigers bases. After some time to rest and catch your breath, a welcome dinner will be held.

Day 2. November 5 Kunming (B/L)
Today we will go to Jiaoye Park in the suburbs of Kunming to visit the Hump Monument, a memorial honoring the pilots who flew over the Himalayas and gave their lives in World War II. Then we will visit the Bamboo Temple which is a Mahayana Buddhist Monastery. Set in the tranquil hills just outside Kunming in the hills, this complex dates back to the Tang Dynasty. It is famous for its 500 life sized carved Arhats or disciples of Buddha. After lunch, we will set out for the small Flying Tigers Museum which was established in memory of the 1st American Volunteer Group (AVG) of the Chinese Air Force, famously nicknamed the Flying Tigers, and composed of pilots from the United States Services commanded by Claire Lee Chennault whose mission was to help in the defense of China against Japanese forces during WWII.

Later in the afternoon we will visit the Golden Temple which is China’s largest bronze temple, built in 1672.

Day 3. 06-11-13 Kunming (B/L)
Today we will visit the Stone Forest which is one of the top wonders in China. A typical karst formation, the Stone Forest covers an area of more than three hundred square kilometers. Research has shown that what is now the Stone Forest was, 270 million years ago, an immense expanse of water with a vast stretch of limestone sediment formed over the millennia on the sea bed. As a result of crustal movement, the seabed rose gradually and a large piece of land thus came into being. Exposed to rains and winds, eroded by the elements, the strange-looking limestone ranges were shaped by time.

Today’s lunch is a highlight – a local specialty ‘Yiliang Roast Duck’ which is famous throughout Yunnan.

Day 4. 07-11-13 Kunming – Dali via Chuxiong (B/L)
When advancing Japanese troops cut off the American supply lines in southern Myanmar (Burma) during World War 2, General Joseph Stillwell took on the enormous task of building a road from Ledo in India via northern Burma into China to Kunming. Today we will experience this world famous Old China-Burma Road. We drive from Kunming to Dali, but before reaching Dali we will make a stop the ancient town of Yunnan Yi where we can see many historic relics including the classical appearance of the town, the airport built in WW2, the airfield runway used by Flying Tigers and the ancient post road. This town was most important Strategic Counter-offensive Base for Allied Forces in the Far East. Later we carry on the Dali and check in at our hotel.

Day 5. 08-11-13 Dali (B/L)
In the morning we visit the morning market at Xizhou (the largest Bai village) and later Zhoucheng Village, well-known for its tie-dye craftsmen, where you can observe how the Bai people make tie-dye products at home. Then we take a stroll around Dali Old Town. The history of this town can be traced back to the Tang Dynasty when Dali was the capital of the Nanzhao Kingdom, the home to the Bai minority. The town, which is set out in the form of a chess board with four gates guarding the east, south, west and north walls, is situated between the Cangshan Mountains and Erhai Lake, a natural configuration that seems specially designed for a good bountiful life.

Day 6. 09-11-13 Dali – Baoshan (B/L)
After breakfast we leave Dali and drive along the old China-Burma Road through stunning countryside towards Baoshan. (5-6 hour drive) We cross the Mekong River and drive along the original remaining parts of this legendary road. Later in the afternoon we arrive in Baoshan and check in at our hotel.

Day 7. 10-11-13 Baoshan – Ruili (B/L)
Today we continue along the old China-Burma Road to Ruili, via Longling & Mangshi (About 6-7 hours drive). Today’s drive will be a breathtaking ride on twisting and turning mountain roads with stunning valley views. On the Nujiang River (Salween River) there is the famous Huitong Bridge which was blown up by Chinese army in 1942 to prevent the Japanese advance so that the whole of Yunnan province escaped Japanese occupation. Before reach Longling, we stop at Songshan Mt. Campaign Site in memory of the heroes who contributed their lives during WW2. Songshan Mountain has steep cliffs and deep valleys on three sides, and the old China-Burma road winds through the waist of mountain, an extremely steep and strategically important position. This was a major battlefield which has been preserved well and is listed as a key cultural relic. Afterwards, we continue to Wanding where the old Burma road once crossed the border into Burma and visit the historically important Wanding Bridge where every day thousands of tons of essential war supplies for China crossed in 1944. After that we continue to Ruili. After dinner, we will visit the prosperous Night Market which attracts many businessmen from Burma, Laos, Thailand, India, Pakistan and Nepal. Many travelers come to this market to buy Jade products.

Day 8. 11-11-13 Ruili – Tengchong (B/L)
Morning sightseeing in Ruili where we can visit the Border Trading Market, Dai Minority Village and the Little Carriage Buddhism Temple that has lasted several hundred years. Then we drive to Tengchong via Longchuan, Yingjiang & Lianghe, enjoying the rainforest scenery on the way.(3-4 hours).

Day 9. 12-11-13 Tengchong (B/L)
In the morning we visit Tengchong Beihai (North Sea) Wetland Reserve, located in the northwest of the county, 12.5 km from the city, which is the only national wetland protection zone in Yunnan Province and is important eco-tourism and scientific study. The broad expanse of paddy fields and lakes, bamboo-made bridges and little boats sliding along the river creates a quiet typically Chinese scene. Then we visit Heshun Township – one of the most beautiful villages in China with its impressive library of over 70,000 books, well preserved houses and courtyards. There also we see WWII Museum in Heshun Old Town, the first and largest in Yunnan.

Day 10. 13-11-13 Tengchong (B/L)
Today we visit the Graveyard of the National Heroes, with its 9168 ranked and anonymous graves of Chinese and other soldiers. It was built honoring officers and soldiers of China Expeditionary Force who fought against the Japanese. Afterwards, we tour this spectacular and very different part of China featuring hot springs and geysers. Tengchong is one of China’s three major geothermal areas, with many hot water and hot vapor springs Tengchong is a popular resort where Chinese people come to bathe in the hot waters and have medical treatment.

Day 11. 14-11-13 Tengchong – Chuxiong (B/L)
Today we drive to Chuxiong by means of the express way, stopping for lunch at Dali. We will cross over Gaoligong Mountain which is the National Reserve for primitive forests and wild animals, making several stops en route for rest and photos. Overnight in Chuxiong

Day 12. 15-11-13 Chuxiong – Kunming – Guilin (B)
Drive back to Kunming by express road, and connect with flight to Guilin. On arrival, check at hotel.

Day 13. 16-11-13 Guilin (B/L)
Today we take a short drive to visit Yang Tang Airport which once played a very important role in the Sino-US cooperation of fight against Japanese imperialism. The airport and the war remind us to mention American Air Force: Flying Tigers. In 01 August, 1941, Lake Infants Chennault formed the American Volunteer Air Force named Flying Tigers. Based on the airports in Liuzhou, Hengyang, Guilin and Nanning, the Flying Tigers had the task of making sure the security in south of China, as well as fighting against Japanese transportation army in the sea. In the afternoon visit the Reed Flute Cave, named after the reeds used in the manufacture of flutes that grow near it. The cave system has a stunning array of natural limestone formations that are made all the more impressive by the clever use of colored lighting. Then visit Elephant Trunk Hill, as its name implies a quite remarkable example of the hand of nature upon the landscape. Next to Seven Star Park, takes its name from its seven peaks which are laid out like the Big Dipper constellation (with its handle bent forward). The park is on the eastern side of the Li River central Guilin city. Attractions in the park include: Seven Star Cave, Dragon Hiding Cave, Flower Bridge, the Zoo, Maping Mosque, Guihai Forest of Steles and much more. Covering an area of 1.34 square kilometers, it is the largest park in Guilin, and contains some of the finest sights in the city.

Day 14. 17-11-13 Guilin – Yangshuo (B/L)
After breakfast, take a short drive to join a cruise that will take you on a voyage of discovery along the Li River. The river wends its way through the unique scenery of Karsts (Limestone Mountains) that have strange and fabulous shapes. Admire the shapes and try to guess their names – Crown Rock, Conch Hill, Jade Lotus Peak and Snow Lion Peak are just a few. Enjoying lunch on board. On arriving at Yangshuo, we take a walk on West Street which is the oldest street in Yangshuo with over 1,400 years of history. Situated at the center of Yangshuo County, West Street has become, since the 1980’s, a window of eastern and western culture and the biggest ‘foreign language center’ in China. Farewell dinner will be arranged this evening.

Day 15. 18-11-13 Yangshuo – Departure (B)
Transfer to airport for your departure flight to Shanhai or Hong Kong, then the USA.
